Hong Kong artist who graduated from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris in the late 1980s.
A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, avant‑garde artist Marzo To (陶馬素) defies easy categorisation. His oeuvre oscillates between the sombre, melancholic and mystical on one hand, and the playful, whimsical and childlike on the other. Perhaps the most honest way to understand him is to let his life’s work—which we endeavour to present here as completely as possible—speak for itself, revealing the artist he was, and wasn’t.
As a person, Marzo was a true free spirit—gregarious and an eternal optimist to the very end, he remained faithful to the inner impulses from which his art sprang. Seasoned journalist Diana Lin once quipped about him: “He was an enigma to some, a rogue to others—a munificent rogue nonetheless.”
